Yukio Mishima's Last Day

On the day of his suicide #seppuku, Yukio Mishima made an impassioned speech to army troops, calling on them to rise up and "restore the emperor". Mishima was one of the most influential Japanese writers of the 20th century and was considered for the Nobel Prize three times. He voiced his political ideas publicly and was ready to go a long way for his ideas. As his suicide notes later revealed, he expected to fail, but hoped that his seppuku would transform Japan. Taken from the fourth chapter of Paul Schrader's brilliant 1985 film "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" depicting the life and work of the writer Yukio Mishima. This last day brings to life the ritual suicide committed by Mishima on November 25, 1970 in Japan. This act of seppuku did not go according to plan, and according to many media critics and politicians of the time, the suicide was also pointless: at best, an artistic performance by a showman and, at worst, a futile gesture by a deranged extremist. Mishima was a hardcore nationalist, who wanted to restore the divinity of the emperor, strengthen Japan's army and discard the country's pacifist constitution. He felt western values were invading and weakening Japan like a cancer.
