Saving Lives: Dharma and Mental Crisis.

Jangsa Animal Saving Trust is established for the sole purpose of saving lives. While our ultimate end is for the liberation of all sentient beings, the means to that higher goal is by saving the lives of all sentient beings - of the four legged, and now for the two legged homo sapian, more emphatically. In this regard, Lama Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche who established Jangsa and is popularly known for saving the lives of countless animals now maintained in humane shelters in 7 dzongkhags in Bhutan as well as in Kalimpong in India, was deeply concerned at the alarming climate of depression and rising spates of suicides in our Dharma nation and the Land of Gross National Happiness. This realization was starkly borne out in the rising numbers of people who came to Rinpoche seeking solace and solutions for their mental crisis, and also from tragic case of suicide that Rinpoche had to spiritually officiate at in recent times. This exacerbating trend of mental crisis can also be attributed to factors such as the Covid pandemic, high cost of living pressures, rapid individual behavioral changes, and the fast shifting socio-cultural priorities in our tight knit traditional society. There is no greater task and virtue to saving the lives of sentient beings. All tools available should be employed and in this we must appreciate the efforts of specialist and expertise from all over the world. One may even be surprised to discover many remedies at one’s own doorstep - our very own time tested dharma! The critical need for addressing mental crisis stares in the face of an unfathomable lack of ingenuity for not incorporating the tools and methods of the entire 84,000 corpus of the dharma designed to ‘tame one’s mind’ into the toolkit for combating mental health crisis in the sole Vajrayana kingdom in the world. Rinpoche thus urged Jangsa to make this first ever podcast to sow the seeds of a hundred reasons in all vulnerable person to prevent them from a tragic end in a mental crisis, and to open the discussion for adopting time tested methods and tools from the treasure trove of dharma to combat this expanding malaise of our times. We exhort all to please share these reasons contained in the podcast with all because any precious human birth saved is an incalculable service to the highest aspirations of all the Bodhisattvas and Buddhas in all the ten directions.
