How to Play the 'C Major' Scale on One Guitar String (as in Mick Goodrick - The Advancing Guitarist)

In his excellent book the Advancing Guitarist, Mick Goodrick dedicates a good portion of first section to exploring the scale of C Major (and its modes) all over the neck on a single string at a time. I spent many hours doing this, and it was probably one of the best things I have ever done for my playing and understanding of the guitar. I highly recommend that you do the same. In this lesson you'll learn how to find the notes of the C Major scale on any string, some useful ways of viewing and understand the way the scale is constructed, and a handy tip to help you navigate in the higher frets. You'll notice that I don't talk about the names of the notes (other than the root). This is not because that isn't important - in fact it's equally important (despite what some people may have you believe) as the function or number in the scale. But I believe it can be confusing when you start out to think about too many things at once, and at this stage the concept of the pattern, which can be moved on to other strings, and ultimately to any key, is more important. Yours truly, Aleister James Campbell #JazzGuitarLesson
