Great Dixter: A Garden Richer in Biodiversity than the Surrounding Countryside with Fergus Garrett

2023 RUTH BORUN LECTURE SERIES The Southern California Horticultural Society was pleased to present its 2023 Ruth Borun Lecture Series with guest speaker Fergus Garrett, CEO and Head Gardener at Great Dixter Garden in Northiam, East Sussex, UK. Garrett will explore the dynamic nature of Great Dixter and share how integrating native plants with exotics, embracing a chemical-free environment, allowing the countryside to flow into the garden, and other factors have led to greater biodiversity in a cultivated environment. Great Dixter was the home of gardener and garden writer Christopher Lloyd (1921-2006), who spent his whole life, from childhood on, working in this garden, and writing about it for nearly 50 years. Under Lloyd’s mentorship, Garrett was assigned the position of Head Gardener in 1993 and learned to keep the garden constantly changing throughout the seasons as well as to be adventurous in trying out new plants and plant combinations. We are very excited to have welcomed Garrett and to hear what he has to tell us. We are also thankful to our friends at the Los Angeles Zoo for enabling us to present this special event at their wonderful Witherbee Auditorium.
