Microplastics in the Environment 2023 | Lecture 1 | Introduction to Microplastics

Speaker: Professor Julian Aherne | Associate Professor at Trent University (Canada) Julian Aherne is a faculty member in the School of Environment at Trent University, Ontario, Canada. During the last three decades his research has primarily focused on the impacts of air pollution (e.g., sulphur and nitrogen deposition) on semi-natural ecosystems and the determination of critical loads in support of the UNECE ‘Air Convention’ and the Canada-US Air Quality Agreement. During 2017 he began working on microplastics, initially focusing on the atmospheric transport of microplastics into remote lake catchments (distant from urban centres), but this expanded to an interest in the use of biomonitors of microplastic deposition, catchment budgets to quantify microplastics residence time, microplastics in arctic lakes, microplastics signatures in urban storm water ponds, and the fate of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants.
