The Evolving Landscape of Employee Ownership Investing

There is growing momentum in support of Employee Ownership, driven by demographic trends, interest of policy-makers, the growth of new models such as Employee Ownership Trusts, and the recent media coverage of the use of partial Employee Ownership strategies by private equity funds. But it can be hard for investors and investment advisors to know where to get started. How can one make sense of the sea of acronyms? What are the highest impact approaches? What range of returns can be expected? Join us for an conversation with leaders in employee ownership and impact investing: Alison Lingane, founder of the Employee Ownership Catalyst Fund, and Julie Menter, Program Director of Transformative Financing Structures at Transform Finance. The session will be moderated by Felipe Witchger, co-founder of Francesco Collaborative and co-director at Catholic Impact Investing Collaborative. Bios: Julie Menter is the Program Director, Transformative Financing Structures, at Transform Finance. Transform Finance leads research and develops tools and content to inform investors about why and how to invest in Employee Ownership and other alternative forms of ownership (consult their Learning Hub for more information). In this conversation, Julie will share insights from Transform Finance’s soon-to-be-released briefing paper about the financing landscape for Employee Ownership, which includes an in-depth analysis of the current landscape of EO funds. Alison Lingane, who co-founded Project Equity, is focusing now on expanding investment capital to grow employee ownership. In its first ten years, Project Equity created dozens of new EO companies and consulted directly to over 100 businesses on the path to EO. Alison’s experience as founder and manager of the Employee Ownership Catalyst Fund—designed to fill the bank financing gap for EO transitions of all forms—is especially relevant. Alison will share insights from her in-depth analysis of the EO investing landscape to deepen understanding of current and future investment opportunities. Felipe Witchger brings 15 years as an investor, operator, and consultant. He was the Founding Executive Director of the Community Purchasing Alliance (CPA), where he spent 10 years building and operating a purchasing cooperative that was entirely designed, governed, and owned by its member churches, schools, and movement partners. He has since co-founded the Francesco Collaborative, which draws on the faith lineage of Catholic Social Tradition and organizes impact investors, entrepreneurs, and movement leaders to catalyze a practice of finance and investment that nurtures an economy of solidarity, justice, repair, and ecological flourishing.
