Hong Kong’s Fenwick Pier to be demolished after serving foreign navy sailors for decades

Owned by the non-profit Servicemen’s Guides Association (SGA), the city’s only American navy pier was built in 1970 on what was once the harbourfront in the Wan Chai district. After Britain returned its former colony Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997, the government asked the SGA to serve all foreign military ships, including those from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Peru, Thailand and Netherland. In 1994, a shopping centre called Fleet Arcade was opened at the pier, helping foreign sailors with hospitality bookings, questions about Hong Kong and other services. Many shops in the arcade closed when land reclamation work began nearby in 2011. The more-recent Covid-19 pandemic was a further blow, leaving only a few remaining businesses that must leave in early February 2022 before the building will be razed to make way for a fire station.
