Team 5 - Heart Beat the Odds

Micheal Awah, Joshua Halberstadt, Ray Noh, Emma-Kate Price The aim of this project was to create a heart rate monitor and cadence sensor as you find in modern smartwatches using tools and concepts learned in ES50. The heart rate monitor will use a photodiode to collect data from the user and display it on an LCD screen, while the cadence monitor will use acceleration data to output tones that match the speed of the user. The motivation behind this project is to gain a deeper understanding of how heart rate and cadence are measured and reported to users in the real world. The goal of the project is to implement the two measurement functions described in a reliable and accurate manner. This project represents a ground up approach to implementing smartwatch technology and aims to grow our understanding about how companies such as Apple and Garmin track steps and heart rate in their own products.
