FSL - Carmen Cicero: The Visionary Work: Reflections on Art and Life

Carmen Cicero came of age as a young artist in the 1950s inspired by Abstract Expression-ism. He earned a B.A. at Newark State Teachers College, did graduate studies at Hunter College with Robert Motherwell and received an M.F.A. from Montclair State University. Born in Newark, NJ, Cicero began summering in Provincetown and Truro in the 1960s, studying briefly with Hans Hofmann. Cicero was one of the first of the Second Generation of Abstract Expressionists to switch from an abstract to a figurative mode. Following a fire in 1971 in his New Jersey studio, Cicero moved to New York’s Bowery where he has resided ever since. The artist is represented in over 35 museum collections, 60 solo shows and over 175 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. His work was shown in six Whitney Annuals. The exhibition at PAAM, curated by Bill Evaul, consists of the artist’s recent visionary works (1990-2012). The critic Phyllis Braff has written about these pieces: “What seems particularly significant in Cicero’s art is the way he blends levels of subjectivity, accumulated experiences, dreams and earlier art in what seems to be a reflection of the multi-faceted contemporary mind in an inform-ation age.” A forthcoming book will be published by Schiffer on the artist’s art and career.
