Sepsis: Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) Score

The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score involves the evaluation of the neurologic, respiratory, cardiac, coagulation, hepatic, and renal systems. Between 0 and 4 points are assigned for each parameter, with 0 being considered normal and 4 indicating a high degree of dysfunction. Patients with fewer than 9 points on the SOFA score are considered to have a less than 33% risk of mortality. Patients with 9 to 11 points are considered to have a risk of mortality between 40 and 50%. While for patients with more than 11 points, the risk of mortality is considered to be greater than 95%.
