Plumbers Snake Diagnostic In some circumstances when a toilet plunger cannot dislodge blockage and clear the toilet's u-trap another option is to use an auger, or what is sometimes referred to as a plumber's snake. Unlike a toilet plunger, which forces water through the u-trap of the toilet, an auger extends a spring coil through the entire u-trap of the toilet up to about 3 feet. A length that usually pushes through any blockage in caught the toilet. Remember at 3 feet an auger is only used to clear the obstructions in the toilet itself and cannot reach the sewer line. If the toilet is clear and the blockage is located in the sewer line then a professional plumber will need to snake the line. Tools Needed Augers are available at most hardware stores and home improvement centers. Making the Repair To begin, extend the crank handle of the auger, retracting the coils into the shaft. Then insert the coil head into the toilet bowl with the coils in the drain. Once positioned crank and pull the handle toward the shaft of the auger, which will extend the coil head into the toilet's u-trap. Crank the handle through any blocked spots, until the auger is fully extended. There may be some difficult spots, though once the blockage is free water should begin to drain from the bowel. Once water begins to drain freely reverse the crank handle retracting the coil head back into the auger body and flush the toilet. The toilet should cycle completed after the first attempt although in some circumstances this process may need to be repeated 2 or 3 times for the toilet to clear.
