Open Space: Night Lovell | Mass Appeal

Before cutting all of his hair off, Canadian rapper Night Lovell dropped by MASS APPEAL's HQ and put us up on the music scene in his Ottawa, Ontario hometown. Toronto's lesser-known baby brother hasn't produced as many household names in hip hop quite yet, but Lovell explains that the city is still ripe with underground talents, shouting out Drexler, Cole, and his DJ Shaq, who makes beats. Night Lovell makes beats as well, sometimes under the alias KLNV (Killanov). Back in his school, Lovell's days would be a consistent cycle of class, running track, and crafting instrumentals (he clarifies, "I'd make beats, but I didn't make music"). But after spending 2013 listening to A$AP Rocky, JAY-Z, and Travis Scott, Lovell set out to make his first song, the self-produced "Dark Light". "I was just putting words together to make a song," the 20-year-old artist says. "There were some references there, but at that point it was just about making a song, with vocals, on my beat." The track went on to gain more than 10 million plays on Soundcloud and another 12 million views of the music video. MASS APPEAL sat down with Night Lovell for our latest episode of "Open Space," in which he discusses reaching his milestones, staying as sober as possible, and what his studio essentials are.
