The Giant Killer (Walter Lantz, 1924) with Dinky Doodle

When Walter Lantz was in his early twenties, and already a veteran animator, he became J.R. Bray's final animation director at the Bray Studios. At Bray, Lantz first worked on the second series of Col. Heeza Liar cartoons. These later Heeza Liars were being done in an Out of the Inkwell-style fashion, a la Max Fleischer, combining animation and live action footage. As the second Heeza Liar series was winding down, Walter had an opportunity to create his own series—thusly, in 1924, Dinky Doodle and his dog Weakheart debuted. This is a later entry in the Dinky Doodle series. The Giant Killer was a very early entry; only the second film in the series. This particular print reflects a later post-synch soundtrack reissue commissioned by the Bray Studios in the 1930s; seen here in a French reissue of that sound version. 16mm print and SD reference copy courtesy of the Stathes Collection. For nearly 20 years, the Cartoons On Film team has been locating and reuniting rare 16mm and 35mm prints of Walter Lantz's silent era cartoons, and we've also been collecting hi res scans of prints in other collections. Cartoons On Film's long term plan is to restore and re-release all of the surviving Dinky Doodle cartoons as part of our Cartoon Roots Blu-ray and DVD collections. We look forward to releasing the first batch of these new restorations in the near future.
