Full Kit walk through July 2024

eDrum nerd alert! I recently changed my kit set-up (again!) and added some new gear. I thought it would be fun to do a walk-through of the gear I’m using and provide some info on why I chose this equipment. This current set-up allows me to play a 'standard' 4-piece set-up, but I still have all my 'toys' in easy, reachable places. Highlights: My Win10 laptop is solely dedicated to running Superior Drummer 3, EZ Drummer 3 and a few select SDX and EZX expansion packs. It's taken me a few years of a lot of research and trial & error, but my laptop now runs my VST's flawlessly with no noticeable latency. I ALWAYS have it on ‘airplane mode’, and it’s been optimized for peak performance. I also shut down or deleted all other background apps. My DAW of choice is Studio One V6 by Presonus. I've owned a few DAW's, but I find that this one was fairly easy to learn, it's easy to navigate, and, like most things, you can find a TON of tutorials online for it. In front of/underneath the laptop is a Presonus Atom midi controller that allows me to quickly create musical phrases and loops using the instruments and loops built into Studio One. All my gear runs through a Zoom L12 mixer, and that allows me to mix and blend all the various things going on into my headphones and out to a stereo mix into my Zoom Q2N 4K camera. My headphone choice for edrums are Audio Technica ATHM50X’s. Love them! I've tried a bunch of in-ears and on-ear phones, but to my ear, these just sound best. I'm a 'module guy', meaning that although I have SD3/EZD3, I'd much prefer staying out of my laptop in a perfect world. I use 2 modules simultaneously, a Roland TD50X and a Roland TM6 Pro. I've used 2 modules at the same time for MANY years. I started playing Vdrums in 1997, and since then I've owned every flagship Roland has ever made along with many of their mid-tier modules. I've also owned modules by 2Box, Yamaha and EfNote. I haven't tried a Mimic yet, but from what I know as of this video is there's a new version coming, so, as always, I'll keep an eye out for that. I also suspect Roland is working on a new flagship as the 50 came out in 2016 and the 50X upgrade was 2021. My current module combo is by far my fave, ever. My 50X includes modified stock Roland kits, kits I downloaded from Roland Cloud and 6 sound packs I bought: 3 from Vexpression (2 from Alan, 1 from Chris), 1 pack from Drum Tec & 2 from Edrum Workshop. I’m a huge fan of adding sound packs and then cut/pasting/mix n’ matching various pieces of kits into others. These sound packs all sound very different from each other, which is exactly what I am going for - variation. I choose the kits from each pack that suit my taste. When I want “real” drums, I use SD3 or EZD3. My iPad is used for loops and musical phrases. My Roland kit includes the 3 digital pads – the Hats, Snare & ride. I've played eDrums for 25+ years, and these 3 digital pads are the BEST playing/feeling pads I’ve ever played for sure!! The 2 pads to the left of the hat are connected to the TM6 – the 12” PD128 mesh pad is used as an aux snare, and I use the PD8 as a side tom. I also y-cable my main kick into both modules to give me 4 layers of samples for a big, beefy kick. That’s a KD10 kick pad tower tucked next to the hat. I use all DW5000 pedals and have since the mid 80’s. Love them! I use Kat tennis-style ball beaters on both kicks. They’re super quiet, and they feel great...very similar feel to playing on an acoustic kick (I play acoustic drums weekly in Church). My multi-pads are an SPD SX Pro which I use for loops and unique one-shots, a Nord Drum 3P which is a drum synth - it's not sample based, and the Octapad which I’ve owned since 2010 (I updated the firmware in 2012). The Octa is STILL one of my fave pads for sounds, layering, and effects, and the playability and feel are outstanding. I've owned all 3 SPD sample pads -- first the S, then the SX, and now the Pro. The SX is great, but the Pro is worth upgrading to if you have the budget. I often midi the Octa to the Nord as I've found that combo gives me some wildly unique results. I have a KT10 kick pedal (great pedal!) and FD9 hat pedal connected to the Octa -- that allows me to play the Octa by itself as a mini-kit. I have a BOSS RC1 looper connected to both the Nord & Octa. Lastly, my current fave practice pad is the Reflexx pad. It’s sitting on a Real Feel pad (which I use occasionally for rebound practice), but right now my preference is the Reflexx. That’s it….thanks for tuning in. Hit me up with any questions and hope you have a great day!
