Mozart mentions these variations in a letter to his father dated Vienna, March 29th, 1783. Incidentally, on the score I used (Universal Edition), it was said to be composed on the 25th of August 1784. Not that it's a big deal. Mon tres cher Pere! I do not think it can be necessary for me to write you much about the success of my concert, as you will probably have heard of it already. Enough--the theatre could not possibly have been fuller and all the boxes were taken. What pleased me most, however, was that his Majesty the Emperor was present, was delighted and applauded me loudly. It is his custom to send money to the box-office before he enters the theatre, otherwise I should have had every reason to expect more from him, for his satisfaction knew no bounds. The sum he sent was twenty-five ducats. The items were as follows: (1) The new Hafner symphony; (2) the aria, accompanied by four instruments, from my Munich opera, Se il padre perdei, sung by Madame Lang; (3) the third of my subscription concertos, played by myself; (4) Countess Baumgarten's scena, sung by Adamberger; (5) the little concertante symphony from my latest final musique; (6) the favourite concerto in D with which I have incorporated the variations rondo played by myself; (7) the scena from my last Milanese opera, Parto m'affretto, sung by Mademoiselle Täuber; (8) I played a little fugue (the Emperor being present) and variations on an aria from an opera called The Philosophers. I was recalled, and played variations on an aria "Unser dummer Pöbel meint" etc., from The Pilgrims from Mecca; (9) my new rondo, sung by Madame Lang; (10) the last movement of the first symphony.
