Uganda Midwives Urge Government on Quality Health Care to Mothers

The National Midwives Association have urged the government to improve the welfare of midwives for quality delivery of health care services to pregnant mothers. In northern Uganda, Women in the villages gives birth along the roadsides due to slow movement while being transported to health facilities. The latest incident involved 26-year old Nancy Akello who last week delivered along Mutema road while being transported to Lacor Health Centre III in Amuru Sub County. According to UNFPA, the number of filled midwife positions in health centre III and above facilities has decreased from 1961 in 2009 to 1131 in 2015 hence an increase in high mortality rate in the region. There is still a big gap of 833 midwives positions in health centre IIs countrywide. Currently Uganda has a total of 21,155 midwives registered with the UNMC that are eligible to practice. Although this has contributed to increasing of the positions filled in public health facilities as per the Ministry of Health staffing norms to 75.3%3, it is an equivalent of 1 midwife for every 2000 population.
