T-Hog to Tunkhannock

On June 22nd, 2024, I returned to the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad to chase their second Iron Horse Rambles excursion of the year pulled by Reading T-1 4-8-4 2102 from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. This was the first excursion to depart out of the new Nesquehoning Station, as well as the first time a steam excursion has gone to Tunkhannock since 2010, when Gulf Mobile & Ohio 425 (the RBMN’s other steam locomotive) went there. Due to the 18 mile, 2.2% downhill grade from Mountain Top to Pittston, the railroad’s Fast Freight SD50’s would tow the train and provide dynamic braking between those two spots. While understandable, I was still disappointed (I don’t like the Fast Freights in case you couldn’t tell). Another thing to note is that 2102 ran tender first from Tunkhannock to Pittston. Overall, the chase was a little mediocre. There were definitely moments that were fucking awful (looking at you Ransom and Tunkhannock), but when things went right, they went right. I can’t wait to see 2102 again next year, but I am NEVER chasing to Tunkhannock again. I’m just gonna stick with the usual Reading - Jim Thorpe runs from now on thank you very much.
