EPIC Indian Breakfast FOOD TOUR + Ahom Kingdom Historical Sites | Sivasagar, Assam, India

India is a country of wonders. There are beautiful, exciting, and brand-new experiences around every corner. There’s so much to see and do, and each region and state is different from the last. While you’re there, you must visit the northeast region of the country, which is so different from every other part of India. It was a blast to explore! Follow Afzal on Instagram: www.instagram.com/arshad_afzaal97 After spending a couple of days exploring Jorhat and nearby Majuli Island, my friend Afzal and I set out on a day trip to Sivasagar, the capital of the Ahom Kingdom for over six centuries! There are lots of monuments and historical sites there and I couldn’t wait to check them out! We started off at Maar Akhol Restaurant, an ethnic restaurant that’s right across the street from Rang Ghar, an 18th-century sports arena. We would go there later. Now, it was time to eat! The entire restaurant was built on stilts and made of wood and bamboo. I ordered a Mughlai paratha, which contained chicken, chilies, and egg, and sipped a delicious, milky chai while I waited for my order. It was cut into four squares and reminded me of an Argentine empanada. I loved the combination of the bread, chicken, spices, and chilies! I tried it with a spicy, green chili sauce. There was so much chicken in it that it was falling apart! I would have loved some mint or tamarind chutney with it, but it was still a phenomenal breakfast. It only cost 100 rupees/roughly $1.43 U.S., while my friends’ aloo parathas cost 60 rupees/about $0.86 U.S. each. I took some amazing mouth fresheners before we left and headed over to Rang Ghar. It costs 300 rupees/$4.29 U.S. for foreigners to enter and only 25 rupees/$0.36 U.S. for Indian residents. The Rang Ghar is a royal pavilion where the king and other spectators would watch bird and animal fights and cultural programs. It was Asia’s first amphitheater and was built by the Ahom king Pramatta Singha. It’s beautiful! It reminded me of some of the royal tombs I saw in Delhi. We saw where the king would watch the bullfights from and then headed upstairs. It’s more of a viewing point than an arena and is made out of mud bricks. The architecture is stunning! Then we headed to eat again! We rode through the town and arrived at Chaulung, which sells sweets and baked goods. I ordered a potato samosa, an onion pakora, and more chai! I loved the onion in the pakora. It reminded me of a blooming onion! The samosa was lightly fried and doughy on the inside. I loved the spices in it! I tried some chili sauce on it, but it wasn’t that hot. My total was only 20 rupees! There were lots of vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and other items. I got some gold bangles for my wife for 7500 rupees/roughly $107 U.S. each. Then we stopped by the Sivasagar Sivadol, the biggest Shiva temple in all of Asia at 104 feet high. It’s also the oldest and was built in 1730. A man there put some tikka on my forehead and tied a wristband around my wrist. I tipped him for blessing me and giving me the wristband and rang the bells inside the temple. You bow as you pass through the doorway to the Shiva linga, where people make offerings with flowers, fruit, and milk. You have to be careful because there are a lot of pigeons there, but visiting the linga is such a beautiful cultural experience. Experiences like this is why I love travel. Outside, we saw lit candles, which are offerings to the gods for more wishes, which differs from Catholicism, where you make a prayer to someone who has passed. Behind the temple is a huge pond called Joysagar Pukhri, which is said to have been dug in one night and filled with water. There are ducks and geese there as well as vendors and a nice viewpoint where you can look out over the lake. It’s beautiful, but unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage around the shores. Then we headed out to look for some sweets! We found some at the Rasraj Hotel, where we got a confection that Sivasagar is famous for and more chai. It’s a super dense bar with chocolate, milk, and jaggery and reminded me of a Colombian dessert. It was delicious! I hope you enjoyed my tour of Sivasagar!
