The Rainier Clubcar on the Northern Pacific North Coast Limited

Back from nearly 5 years away, stored and repainted at a partner railroad, the Rainier Clubcar is a premiere artifact in the collection of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. This is a video series from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, in Duluth, Minnesota during the COVID19 shutdown, which has the museum closed temporarily in December of 2020. Car 390, the Rainier Club, was one of six sleeper ob-servation cars in the “Club” series built in 1948 by Pullman-Standard for the streamlined North Coast Lim-ited, which operated between Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Seattle/Portland. The Burlington Route from Chicago to St. Paul, and the Northern Pacific from St. Paul to Seattle operated the train. At Pasco, Wash., a Portland section of the train was switched out and used the Spo-kane, Portland & Seattle Railway to Portland. As built, the cars had one compartment, four double bedrooms, and a buffet lounge observation. Industrial designer Raymond Loewy remodeled the lounge section in 1953. It was con-verted from straight rows of chairs along the sidewalls to a lounge with tables, chairs, sofas, and a glass partition that gave the cars a more modern, relaxed feel. The six cars were used on the North Coast Limited until 1967, when they were withdrawn from service. In 1970, the Rainier Club was sold, completely furnished with china and silverware, to Carroll Mattlin of White Bear Lake, Minn. Mr. Mattlin preserved the car as it was in service, with the exception of one bedroom, which he converted into a galley with an electric range and microwave oven. Mr. Mattlin sold the car to the museum in 1983. The other five cars still survive, although not all are operational.
