Russell Hobbs 28251 Retro Espresso Machine https://amzn.to/4ashBI1 This arrived in a black branded box with images of the coffee machine on the outside along with details on the functions and features. The box opens at the top with an instruction booklet being the first thing that greets you, and everything else is tightly packed and protected with bespoke foam and plastic sleeves. First impressions: this certainly has a nice retro look with the finishing in black with silver trim, and the front dial having a needle indicator. The steamer has a swivel arm and removable nozzle again fitting with the retro look. I thought the water tank and filling system good being able to remove, fill and refit in no time at all. The drip tray is easy to remove and clean, also having an indicator to show if it is full. The instruction booklet is all in English and in my opinion well laid out with linked and detailed diagrams on the first page to identify everything. The usage instructions take you through all the features and process clearly and are easy to understand. After unpacking everything I removed all the transit tape and washed all the parts as per the manual, then filled the water tank and ran the machine without any coffee in, again as per the instructions. I then filled the two shot portafilter sieve with coffee and made a single cup of coffee. The coffee turned out great and I then went on to make a double serving of espresso, and pre-warmed the cups using the cup warming plate on the top of the machine. The water will run for 60 seconds after a 5 second pre-infusion, and you do need to manually shut off the machine once the desired amount has been dispensed if the full 60 second amount is too much. I tested out the steam nozzle which worked great frothing some milk, and this will also dispense hot water when set to its final position which also worked perfectly. The cup warming plate works well warming them through but not making them too hot. I have been using the machine since it arrived and can’t really fault the results it produces, I find it very easy to clean with most parts being removable and it is quite quick. I did think the machine quite loud and you do have to stay with it while making coffee to switch it to the brew position and shut it off once the desired amount has dispensed. Overall this really fits into being a retro style coffee machine, I like the way it has the look but also uses modern features such as the removable water tank. I do find it quite loud and although I initially tested it out on the top of the cooker which amplified the sound a bit, it is still quite loud now I have put it in its place in the kitchen, although not as loud. It makes a great cup or cups of coffee and is quick to use. Overall if you are looking for a retro style machine in my opinion this ticks all the boxes.
