But today's bike battle between Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong (USPS) and Jan Ullrich (Telekom) was not an armed conflict. Just a head to head sporting contest between the two best bicycle riders in the world. Former world TT champ Laurent Jalabert (O.N.C.E.) set the fastest time of the early riders, but then Tyler Hamilton (USPS) smashed all the intermediate times and then set the fastest time (1h08'02"). Hamilton set the standard for the next 21 riders until, with tongue akimbo, Christophe Moreau (Festina) crossed the line with a sensational ride of 1h07'13". The Frenchman was trying to ride into 3rd place if possible head of his Festina teammate Joseba Beloki, but the talented young Basque rider rode a 1h08'27", good enough for 4th. So Beloki and Moreau consolidated their 3rd and 4th place GC positions. Ullrich went out fast and set the fastest splits in front of huge crowds at Hartheim (20.5km) and Grissheim (30km), but Armstrong had the speed and power advantage today. After his record setting (53.986km avg speed) ride Lance told the assembled media that "I was concerned with riding on open roads as it was Ullrich's back yard. You could feel the people cheering for him and see all the signs. But they supported me too; it was cool!" Lance continued by saying "I'm suprised to win today; it means a lot to beat Ullrch at home." "First I want to recover from the Tour, that's the most important thing. Then, my next big objective is the Olympic Time Trial in Sydney. I'll ride both races (road and TT), but it (the TT) is a different thing as far as training." Lance also made a few comments about his USPS Team. "Like last year, I have to give them most of the credit (for my Tour win). We are the only team in the race with 9 riders...like last year, we have great morale. There's a great feeling in the team. It's an interesting mix of young and old guys. I hope they see me as a worthy leader."
