How Joe Rogan Is Related to Gerard Way and Mikey Way of My Chemical Romance (VLOG #39)

In a recent Joe Rogan podcast with Kevin Smith it was briefly discussed that Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance is a cousin to Joe Rogan. Joe's grandmother Josie is Gerard Way's aunt (or more than likely a great-aunt based on his age) but not much else was discussed on the podcast, so I became curious at exactly how they were related. I started by making a genealogy research plan to build information on the grandparents of Gerard Way and Mikey Way, starting with their grandmother Elena Lee Rush who is the inspiration for the song Helena. A google search turned up an obituary showing her maiden name as Spadone and then I was quickly able to find her listed in the Social Security indexes showing her parents names as Savino Spadone and Jennie Anniziati. I then found her in the 1930 census as Helen Spadone, living in Newark with her parents and multiple siblings, including a Josephine Spadone. I was able to confirm this Josephine was Joe Rogan's grandmother, confirming Joe Rogan is a 2nd cousin to Gerard Way and Mikey Way. Their great Uncles Frank G Spadone and John Spadone were also well-known in the coin collecting world. In looking further into Savino Spadone, who also went by the name Samuel Spadone, I found he was born in Melfi, Italy in 1893 to Giovanni Spadone and Lucilla Vitelli. Savino immigrated in 1912 at the age of 18, going to live with his uncle Vincenzo Vitelli who had immigrated in 1901 and was living in Berkeley Heights, NJ. In 1913 Savino's sister Marietta "Mary" Spadone arrived and then in 1920 their younger brother Francesco "Frank" Spadone arrived. Savino submitted his Declaration of Intention for American Citizenship in 1931 and became an American citizen just 2 years later on September 11th, 1933. Savino's brother applied for citizenship in 1938 but in 1945 his petition of was denied with the reason listed as "Character Not Established".
