Full Blog: https://www.dtvdanieltelevision.com/2... Since Maypole day wasn’t traditionally celebrated this year due to coronavirus (May 2020), I decided to make a video that explains the May 1st holiday. So, what is a Maypole (Maibaum), and why is "May Day" celebrated in (Bavaria) Germany? Great questions. Maypole Day or “Mayday” has been a huge spring celebration in Germany since the 13th century. Bavarians hoist an 18-30m maypole or “Maibaum” in their respective cities to celebrate the change of season. Hoisting the Maibaum usually takes places on April 30th in order to celebrate the festivities on May 1st. The maypole itself is extremely heavy and usually takes a dozen men to lift it up. There are many Maypole traditions that take place during the festival such as stealing neighboring Maypoles, climbing the Maypole, and decorating the Maibaum with ribbons, trade signs, and wreaths. You will find this amazing spring festival in just about every city (small and large) in Bavaria, select regions throughout the rest of Germany as well as other German speaking countries (Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein). Are there any other Maypole traditions I forgot to mention? Let me know in the comments!
