It can also refer to something that is unclear or uncertain. For example, this statement by the shark is ambiguous. The word that is unclear or uncertain here is “interact.” What does the shark mean by “interacting” with the fish? Does this mean play? Or, does it mean the shark wants to eat the fish under the guise of an “interaction.” Instruction manuals for assembling products are often ambiguous and unclear. That’s why I prefer watching YouTube videos. And when politicians don’t want to answer a question directly, they often give an ambiguous response. For example, if a politician was asked what their vision of the future looked like, and they said “I support a prosperous America where people thrive and not just survive,” this would be an ambiguous statement. Of course the politician seeks a prosperous America–but what does that mean. Does that mean tax cuts? Does that mean more social programs for the poor? It is unclear what—specifically–the politician means here. Therefore, the statement is ambiguous. Ambiguous is formed by the prefix “ambi” which means both or around, and agitare (ahitare) meaning to drive or to move. So ambiguous literally means "to drive in different directions" which gives the sense of uncertainty or doubt. Author Herman Melville said "A smile is the chosen vehicle of all ambiguities.” This means a smile can be used to convey multiple meanings or emotions, and that it can be difficult to determine the true intent behind a smile. Synonyms for ambiguous are Cryptic Dubious Uncertain Unclear Vague Now that you know what ambiguous means, here is your task: Write about something you are ambiguous about Perhaps you are ambiguous (or unclear) about your future. If so, explain what you are ambiguous about. Maybe you don’t know what career to pursue. Or perhaps you are unsure about where you want to live. Or maybe you are ambiguous about your political or religious beliefs? Or perhaps you are ambiguous about where some of your relationships are going–with family, friends, or romantic partners. It's important to remember that every person is unique, and that the things that one person might be ambiguous about, another might not. So once again, Write about something you are ambiguous about.
