Carol Francis is a caregiver to her husband, who suffers from late-stage Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. She also is a member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council at Christiana Care's Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, Del. Here she discusses the concept of patient and family centered care with Melva Lane, BSN, MBA, RN-BC, Nurse Manager of 3 Surgery at Wilmington Hospital. Mrs. Francis and her husband stayed at Wilmington Hospital in 2009 on Ms. Lane's nursing unit. At that time it was unusual for family members to be permitted to stay overnight in the hospital. Since then, staff at Christiana Care have embraced the concepts of patient and family centered care, and nurses and physicians have come to see family members as an important part of the care team.
