TL;DR: the ribosomal subunit weights for prokaryotes are 30S and 50S, while the whole ribosome is 70S. The corresponding ribosomal subunit weights for eukaryotes are 40S, 60S, and 80S. Prokaryotes: 30S, 50S, 70S (Mnemonic: Prokaryotes are Prime OR prokaryotes are odd) Eukaryotes: 40S, 60S, 80S (Mnemonic: Eukaryotes are Even) Today’s MedCat video covers ribosomal subunit weights, which are measured in Svedbergs, a unit used for assessing the sedimentation coefficient of anything we are looking at, whether that is an individual molecule, protein, or even a ribosomal subunit! In general, the larger the molecule, the larger the sedimentation coefficient. We go over prokaryotic ribosomes as well as eukaryotic ribosomes. Eukaryotic ribosomes are slightly larger than prokaryotic ribosomes, which should make sense as eukaryotes are, in general, much larger than prokaryotes (e.g. humans are much bigger than bacteria!). Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes have small and large subunits. These subunit “weights,” measured in Svedbergs, are not additive due to the fact that sedimentation coefficients are not additive, as other factors besides the mass/weight affect sedimentation coefficient, such as shape and density of whatever we are examining.
