Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is among the most highly original dramatic monologues in English verse. Love songs typically evince the hope of the speaker: hope that a romantic infatuation will bear fruit or that an existing relationship will persist indefinitely. Prufrock, however, is despairing that his love will ever be returned. In fact, the poem is really more about his own insecurities and deficiencies than it is about the object of his affections. From his hairline to his clothes, he obsesses about his failings and loses himself in imaginary conversations. Ultimately, he gives up. This is a song of love thwarted by the speaker's own indecisiveness. American writer and expatriate T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was first published in 1915. The poem was not initially well-received, as it took critics some time to appreciate Eliot's radical style. However, his body of work has received more critical study than that of any other 20th-century poet and in 1996 "Prufrock" was voted England's 26th favorite poem. The poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" contains many powerful symbols, including the magic lantern, representing Prufrock’s ability to demonstrate his emotions better than he can explain in words, and mermaids, representing unattainable sexual intimacy. Important themes include dangerous women, the shame of aging, and the idea that the imagined life is superior.
