"Freedom works well, the government not necessarily" says Dr. Rajeswari Sengupta, onstage at TEDxXIE 2019. The government plays a vital role in various aspects of our lives. The government owns banks, insurance companies, oil companies, power plants, manufacturing companies. Sometimes government meddles in the economy with unchecked powers. But, the government is not the answer to every problem. Dr Rajeswari Sengupta is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in Mumbai, India. In the past, she has held research positions at the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) in Chennai, the Reserve Bank of India, and the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington D.C. She was a member of the research secretariat for the Bankruptcy Law Reforms Committee that recommended the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 for India. Her research focuses on policy-relevant, macro-financial issues of emerging market economies in general and India in particular in the fields of international finance, open economy macroeconomics, monetary policy and financial markets and regulations. She has published extensively in reputed international journals and authored several book chapters. Dr Sengupta completed her M.A. and PhD in Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).
