This process is called polynomial long division, and it follows a similar procedure to the long division of whole numbers and decimals. First, we will review how to divide whole numbers, including the concept of a remainder. We will apply these ideas to dividing polynomials using a very similar algorithm. Once we get to the end and have the remainder of the division, we will learn how to write the complete answer as the whole part plus the fractional remainder. Finally, we will use the answer to check our work using multiplication. This process will be revisited in a future lesson where we use synthetic division to perform the division of polynomials.
