The Clovis Culture: Wanderers of Prehistoric North America

Clovis stone points were first unearthed in the 1920’s near Clovis, New Mexico, and was a discovery that changed North American archaeology forever. It is also considered by many to be North America’s first invention. The stone points required great skill to create especially the fluted portions running along each side of the point. Its sudden appearance in prehistoric North America around 13,050 years ago marked a period of rapid population growth in the region and cultural expansion as nearly every part of the continent was visited by people wielding the distinctive Clovis stone points. To date around 4,400 Clovis points have been found all over North America. For decades archaeologists argued that the early Americans making and wielding these points were the first Americans, but in recent times numerous sites that predate Clovis sites have been found such as the foot prints in New Mexico. Though these pre-Clovis sites are becoming increasingly accepted by archaeologists they are geographically scattered and unrelated to each other compared to the Clovis sites. By 12,800 years ago the Clovis culture had disappeared. Alongside the culture the megafauna that the people’s consumed also went extinct. The culture existed for only around 250 years which is a brief time span in the context of the larger prehistoric timeline. Yet despite this the culture accomplished so much and laid the ground work for future generations to survive and thrive in prehistoric North America and beyond. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Credits: "Meditative Sunset" by Brian Angulo/Canyons of Light (Bangulo Music) https://bangulomusic.com/home Track plays at (00:00) and at (01:14) All other music from the YouTube Audio Library --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources: Fagan, Brian.
