Because of the convenience and diverse information that the social media and internet provide, people believe that they are exposed to the total reality of the world—that they are able to access and acquire knowledge anywhere, anytime. Unbeknownst to many however, the social media, using an algorithm, is able to predict the interests of one and adjusts when it will appear in the user’s feed accordingly. The reality that social media—as much as culture and society—being an epistemic bubble is explored by the Philippines’ youngest associate justice, Hon. Marvic M.V.F. Leonen. Through his talk, he emphasizes that “Reification is bad but to question what is being reified is good.” Watch this video to learn more about what he believes we must do to prevent reification, to save ourselves and ultimately, the society we live in. In November 21, 2012, he became the youngest Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, who is set to serve the highest tribunal for a total of 21 years. With this position, he works to defend the rights of the marginalized and disadvantaged.
