The cup is the shell which holds the ball.The cup is also covered with hydroxyappetite to allow bone growth into the socket. There are holes to permit a screw to temporarily fix the cup into the acetabulum. Thinner is better for a shell because it allows a bigger ball, which reduces the risk of dislocation. The cup is lined by a polyethylene liner. The plastic is radiated to make it stronger. The Ceramic head fits inside the cup and replaces the ball. Ceramic is better than metal because it wears better according to registry data.
