She was born in Ohio in 1957 and moved to Los Angeles with her family in the 1960s. She started her career as a backup singer for artists like Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Sting, and Anita Baker. She signed with A&M Records in 1986 and released her debut album, Vesta, which featured her first Top 10 R&B hit “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”. She achieved her biggest success with her 1988 album, Vesta 4 U, which included the songs “Sweet Sweet Love”, “4 U” and her signature song, “Congratulations”. She continued to record and perform until her death in 2011 at the age of 53. She was also a diabetes advocate and a mentor to young singers.
