Excavations at Nineveh and Nimrud in 2022 by the Iraqi SBAH and Penn IHSP - Michael DANTI

Excavations at Nineveh and Nimrud in 2022 by the Iraqi SBAH and Penn IHSP Michael DANTI 28th February 2023 16.00 CET (Rome, Paris, Berlin / GMT+1) In 2022, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn Museum) conducted excavations and cultural heritage restoration projects at the Mashqi Gate of Nineveh and at Nimrud in the Ishtar Sharrat Niphi Temple and Palace of Adad-Nerari III (Layard's Upper Chambers) under the direction of Dr. Michael Danti (Penn NELC/Penn Museum). Excavations in previously unexplored parts of Mashqi Gate uncovered re-used Assyrian reliefs of Sennacherib that were likely intended for, or removed from the Southwest Palace of Nineveh that shed new light on late modifications to the monumental architecture in the capital. Work in and around Mashqi Gate and at other city gates is revising our understanding of the city defenses. Penn's Iraq Heritage Stabilization Program is currently preparing to reconstruct the gate through a grant from the ALIPH Foundation. Work at Nimrud has revealed significant new details on the Palace of Adad-Nerari III and this poorly understood period in the city's development. This palace, first excavated by Layard and later by Muzahim Hussein, still has much to offer in terms of our understanding of Assyrian palace architecture, its interior decoration, and the evolution of Nimrud over time. Work in the Ishtar Sharrat Niphi Temple is currently focused on clearing the debris from the ISIS destruction of the building and preparing for a future reconstruction project and excavations in 2023 in previously unexplored areas in the vicinity of the ziggurat and in the temple complex.
