It is very important to understand what this right entails and includes. The right to freedom guarantees freedom for citizens to live a life of dignity among other things. These are given in Articles 19, 20, 21A and 22 of the Indian Constitution. Article 20 deals with the protection of citizens in respect of conviction for offences. This provides for three types of protection of the individual against the State. It cannot be suspended even in case of an emergency. In this session you will learn about the following : 1. Article 20 (00:00) 2. Protection in respect of conviction of offences (0:27) 3. Article 20(1): No ex-post-facto law (0:58) 4. Article 20(2): No double jeopardy (9:39) 5. Article 20(3): No self-incrimination Some key aspects of the topics covered in the session are article 20 of the Indian constitution, important questions on article 20 of the Indian constitution for UPSC, article 20 on human rights, etc. Article 20(1): No ex-post-facto law No person shall be convicted of any offence except for violation of a law in force at the time of the commission of the Act charged as an offence, nor be subjected to a penalty greater than that which might have been inflicted under the law in force at the time of the commission of the offence. Ex-post-facto law A law that retroactively makes criminal conduct that was not criminal when performed increases the punishment for crimes already committed or changes the rules of procedure in force at the time an alleged crime was committed in a way substantially disadvantageous to the accused.
