In October 1962, the US discovered that the USSR was secretly deploying nuclear missiles in Cuba. The confrontation that followed came close to triggering a nuclear war between the two superpowers. It all started when a US reconnaissance plane photographed the missile sites that the USSR was secretly installing in Cuba. Washington reacted by imposing a naval blockade on the island. The Kremlin branded the measure as an act of aggression and said its ships would ignore the blockade.
