You used to be someone important. You used to teach lectures at colleges in many countries. You used to have a group of apprentices following you around, desperate to absorb any drops of wisdom. Some days you missed that. But not often. You’d left it all behind after the war. They’d asked far too much of you. The queen you’d loved was killed. The people you fought to protect were slaughtered. The students you taught took sides and fell to each other’s blades. It was too much suffering for you to take. It was too much for them to ask of you. So, you left. Most forgot your existence. In the repairs of your old world, much of your magic was lost. You slowly watched the new government form, with a counsel of knights charged with keeping the parties in power in check. If someone asked your opinion, you would say you liked it. At least, it was a step above anarchy and war. It seemed to keep peace. You so loved peace. You’d found peace long ago, in the woods. So, you stayed there. The years went by. Time ticked on. The world kept spinning. Humanity left you and your magic behind. But you didn’t mind. You had peace. You gave shelter to the stray traveler but, as the years rolled by, fewer humans wandered into your side of the forest. The trees became your friends. The moss, your company. The animals were neighbors, and you were more than happy to offer them a snack and a drink of water when they stopped by. It was a peaceful existence. But you wondered if you would ever see a human again. Part of you would like to, just once again. Part of you remembers the horrors humans bring.
