But they aren't the only ones running for office. Renata Souza is one of the few Afro-Brazilian women running for office in Brazil — and it isn’t easy. Souza has moved homes twice already because of death threats and can’t go anywhere without a security detail and a bulletproof car. She also has to face a very real threat: armed militias that control access to certain neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.
