The number of strands varies between 38 and 122 per cable. Anchoring: The ends of these metal strands are stressed and anchored to two points: an anchor box inside the bridge tower and an edge girder on the bridge deck. Installation: The installation process for each pair of stay cables takes about two to five days. This involves threading the strands through the HDPE pipe, stressing them to the required tension, and securing them in place. Completion: Once installed, these cables help support the bridge deck and maintain its stability. The Gordie Howe International Bridge will feature a total of 216 stay cables, making it the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America. This process is crucial for the structural integrity and longevity of the bridge. Gordie Howe International Bridge facts: Length The bridge is about 1.5 miles long and will be one of the five longest bridges in North America when it's completed. Design The bridge is cable-stayed and has a main span of 0.53 miles, which is the longest of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. It also has the longest composite steel and concrete bridge deck of any cable-stayed bridge in the world. Towers The bridge's Canadian and US towers are each over 625 feet tall, but will eventually reach a height of 722 feet. Bridge deck Construction of the bridge deck began in December 2022 and was expected to be completed by the end of June 2024. The deck is made up of 54 segments, including a custom-built mid-span closure that takes four to six weeks to install. Cables The bridge has 216 stay cables, and all but 10 were installed by mid-June 2024. Path The bridge will have a 12-foot-wide path for pedestrians and cyclists, which will be the first legal way to cross the Detroit River on foot. The path will connect to local trails and streets on both sides of the bridge.
