Different Types of Mine Entrances in Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Mines Explained, Part 1 of 2

This is just a quick overview showing different mine entrance types in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. People often refer to all mine entrances as "coal mine shafts". This video was aimed to show that more than just shaft entrances exist. There are air shafts, slopes, tunnels & drifts to name a few. I forgot in the video to explain that there are "manways" in addition to the other entrances shown. A manway was an entrance that usually ran parallel to say a slope, or a drift/tunnel. The main slope or tunnel were often used exclusively for hauling coal and equipment both in and out of the mine. Smaller entrances, "manways" were often nearby and would intersect into the mine itself in order to protect men from being crushed or killed from the haulage equipment. Manways were driven in tunnel, slope and even shaft fashion. Hopefully in future videos discussing disasters, the viewer will now understand the difference between the entrances mentioned in the old newspaper articles. As always, thank you for viewing this.
