Ventricular tachycardia is the rapid and repetitive firing of 3 or more PVCs in a row with a range of 100-200 beats per minute originating in the ventricles of the heart. It can lead to ventricular fibrillation, asystole, and sudden death. Dr. Umara Ayub, faculty DrBeen, explains the causes of ventricular tachycardia. There are two principal causes of ventricular tachycardia, focal and re-entrant. Focal can be due to thyroid hormone, low oxygen, stretching of the ventricles, coronary artery disease. All of these can irritate the myocardial cells and lead to ventricular tachycardia. Re-entrant is due to the previous injury to the heart, such as an MI. Scar tissue irritating the heart tissue fires new currents. Each time the current occurs, it causes the heart to contract, which results in premature ventricular contraction. Clinical symptoms include lightheadedness, shortness of breath, chest pain, and cannon a wave. EKG findings are bizarre QRS complex and heart rate greater than 100 beats per minute. EKG waves can be mono-morphic or poly-morphic in ventricular tachycardia. Dr. Umara Ayub also describes that there are two types of ventricular-tachycardia, sustained and unsustained. Sustained tachycardia is life-threatening and can progress to ventricular fibrillation. A patient of unsustained-tachycardia presenting with coronary artery disease and liver dysfunction can be at risk for sudden death.
