Middle-Blocker Timing and Tempo Options in Volleyball

Middle-blockers will typically use a variety of tempos, depending on their ability, the setter's ability, which way they blocked (when attacking in transition), and which rotation they are hitting out of (when in serve-receive). The most common tempos for middle-blockers are listed below. 2nd Step Set - Considered a slower set for a middle-blocker, but it can be used to get more attempts to a talented middle blocker who otherwise wouldn't be able to attack a faster set. 3rd Step Set - The middle blocker will be on his/her 3rd step when the setter is setting the ball. Often times this tempo will be used on a traditional "gap" or "31" type, or when the middle is more effective with a slightly slower "1" ball in the middle of the court. 4th Step Set - The middle blocker will be on his/her 4th step as the setter is setting the ball. This would be your traditional "1" set in the middle of the court.
