2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV - First Long-ish Road Trip & Baby's Very First Sip of a DCFC Session!

It’s hard to believe how much contact was created during the production of this video… It took me six hours to cut this all together. It may not look like much, but when you’re not a full-time editor, it takes a hell of a lot of time to do some thing, someone else might do in an hour or two. Today was the day… A long, road trip, and a very pleasant DCFC session! It was the first fast charging session for this car, but definitely not the last one! In an effort to get home today, about halfway there, I decided to stop at Electrify America in Greenville, South Carolina at Sam’s Club off of I 85. This station has four units set up. Three of them are relatively new Signet units, and the last one which has the CHAdeMO connection, is an older ABB unit. The three Signet units, are less than nine months old, while the older ABB one, didn’t have a date of manufacture on it that I could find. The 2023 Bolt EUV Premier charged at maximum speed of 55 kW for a good portion of the charging curve. It started to taper around 60%. The total charge was from about 23% to 80% on a clear and warm day of around 80°F. This is a relatively small charging station with only four stalls. When I arrived, there was a Rivian R1T, a Kia EV6, and a mustang Mach-E, with my Bolt being the fourth vehicle. One problem that’s far too common when it comes to charging, is people charging their vehicles past 80% on DCFC chargers. The charging curves typically taper past 80% to very slow rates. This increases waiting time for people who are in line waiting to charge. Not a good practice, and it’s essentially like a gasoline powered vehicle parking at a charger. The endgame ends up being the same with people, waiting for chargers. Although I have not witnessed any hostile or angry individuals, waiting at chargers, I imagine that this is a problem that will have to be resolved in the not too distant future! To have only four chargers in a massive parking lot, right off of the interstate, can no longer deemed appropriate. In the future, there’s going to be way more electric vehicles on the road, there’s no doubt in my mind! Charge Point Network operators will have to increase capacity to handle the loads across the entire country. I believe that at some point we will have to start looking at charging facilities that start at at least 24 stalls. And ultimately these will have to scale up in large metro areas, and travel corridors. Personally, I would love to see, Love’s (my personal favorite!), or TA travel centers, etc. put up larger charging facilities on their properties. The air is already there, and the amenities are in place to service travelers along major freeways. Also, if you look at travel center placement maps (which are typically hanging outside the bathrooms (at least at Love’s)), you will see that some of these areas are in perfect placement for large deployment of charging facilities! I really hope that you enjoyed this video, at least, as much as I enjoyed making it for you guys?! As always, have a great evening and an even better weekend ahead… thank you, always, for watching!
