Unpacking Bias in Seeking Mental Health Care for Women of Color | Chandra Carey | TEDxSMUWomen

In this talk that is both personal and rooted in her academic and clinical work, Dr. Chandra Carey explores the way cultural and religious norms can create roadblocks to accessing mental healthcare for black women. Dr. Chandra Donnell Carey is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling and currently serves as the Department Chair in Rehabilitation and Health Services housed in the College of Health and Public Service at the University of North Texas. She has served as an editorial board member for the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and is the former President for the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns and was recently named a Fellow of the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns. Dr. Carey is a mom, wife, fierce advocate, counselor educator and scholar who has made investigating issues affecting persons of color with disabilities a career-long focus. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
