Koalas Return Home After Surviving Australia's Fires

These koalas are returning to the wild after Australia’s wildfires. Dana Mitchell owns Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, along with her husband. Her team is nursing koalas injured by deadly wildfires. “We’ve released moms and joeys, young females have joeys in pouch and to see them go back to the wild, is just amazing because the next generation is going back into the wild to help repopulate. “ The joeys have suffered less injuries. “They were more on mom’s backs so if mom’s been climbing up and down a burning tree. She’s copped most of the injuries.” The population has been almost wiped out. “Prior to the bushfires it was estimated about 60,000 koalas on the island and now after the bushfires they are estimating between 5 – 15,000.” Now, the koalas face a new problem. The wildlife on Kangaroo Island are not getting enough food. So the RSPCA set up temporary feeding stations until vegetation grows back. There’s been an outpouring of donations. The park has received supplies from around the world. "It’s just been overwhelming the support and generosity from around the world,” says Dana.
