Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (aka G6PD deficiency) is the most common enzymopathy worldwide... G6PD deficiency (favism) is an x-linked recessive disorder, therefore more common in males than females. G6PD deficiency is protective against Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Patients may experience an acute hemolytic episode after consuming fava beans (that's why it's called "favism"). Fave beans, in this case, is an oxidative agent. Symptoms include jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine), fatigue, pallor, drowsiness, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath, abdominal, or lumbar pain.
