I can vividly remember how much I detested FM sound as a kid because it was the ‘cheap’ sound option for many computer games back then. The lack of funding for a shiny new soundblaster left you with these unholy metallic noises that only remotely resembled what was supposed to be a rock guitar in Doom. Well, little did I know that FM is actually awesome, if used right. All things string and bell like as well as basses and synth brasses can FM make sound heavenly and all that weird stuff is actually pretty neat too, if put into the right context. Also, FM seems to be enjoying quite a renaissance at the moment, with DX7 prices skyrocketing and even new hardware FM synths popping up every here and then. If you feel you need just a little FM in your life, I’ve got you covered, because little, the FB-01 is, yet it also offers a kind of ‘best of’ of Yamaha’s classic (budget) FM sound. Sure, you can’t really program your own sounds and the real time controls are very limited, but what you get is still possibly the most four operator FM sound per square inch.
