100 years of Women’s Rights in Canada

On January 28, 1916, Manitoba became the first province in Canada to grant some women the right to vote and hold elected office. On the eve of this anniversary, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights invited Canada’s 19th Prime Minister Kim Campbell to speak about how far women have come in 100 years and to consider what remains to be achieved. With candour and humour, Campbell spoke about her own experiences as a woman of firsts – first female justice minister, first female defence minister, first woman to lead the Progressive Conservative party, and Canada’s first and only woman prime minister. Throughout her remarks, Campbell stressed the importance of inclusivity. She recalled her role as Justice Minister in shaping a national symposium held in 1991 on women, law and the administration of justice. Campbell spoke about welcoming diverse voices to the discussion, noting that when people come together face to face, they are able to recognize each other’s humanity and can begin to listen to and understand one another. Later, Campbell recommended that when seeking solutions within a community or a nation, it’s useful to consider “who is missing?” from the conversation. “We all see what we want to see and all of us are guilty of being blind to people in our communities, of not seeing them, of not taking account of what they need,” Campbell said. “A multicultural society and a diverse society does not succeed by virtue of inertia; it does take time, it does take work, it takes resources.” An accessible, bilingual version of this speech, given at the Museum on January 27, 2016, is being prepared.
