Evergoods CTB35 (Civic Travel Bag) - chunky 35L clamshell-style travel bag w/ tons of organization

The Evergoods CTB35 (Civic Travel Bag) is an urban-travel oriented bag in the larger - but not absolute maximum - part of the size spectrum of the one-bag travel type travel bags. * 00:00 - Introduction * 05:23 - For/Not For * 07:56 - Exterior design * 10:09 - Load carriage system * 18:57 - External pockets * 24:59 - Main compartment access * 25:59 - Interior lid pockets * 28:30 - Main compartment * 31:28 - Also consider (Bellroy, Goruck, Aer) Its main claim to fame is probably that it looks and operates like a scaled up version of the company’s famous Civic Panel Loader line of day bags. That is to say, it has a shocking degree of both EDC and travel oriented organization throughout the bag, a very large main clamshell opening main compartment and all the highlights of the rest of EG’s bag lineup including amazing materials, impeccably refined build quality and a really solid load carriage system - whilst also adding in some great travel-oriented features like a super-useful large top stash pocket, dual external water bottle pockets, an aluminum stay for additional back support and probably the most barely-noticeable-when-stowed integrated waist belt I’ve seen in a travel bag to date. On the other hand, the CTB35 probably has three main weaknesses. The first is exactly the same as its strength - it’s like a big scaled up CPL24/28 daypack and that’s kind of a curious niche for a travel bag to be. 35L and 1800g is too big to be usable as an EDC daypack at the destination yet significant space and weight are devoted to EDC-style organization/pocketing. Simultaneously, it’s not as big as class leaders in the OBT space (which hover around 40-45L) so packing a decent secondary EDC use day pack will eat into available space. Secondly, the bag has an at best middle of the road capacity-to-size/weight ratio and at 1800+ grams is fairly heavy for its size. The bag is quite dense and thicc when loaded up and handles as such due to the daypack like construction - in particular the construction puts a lot of the weight when fully loaded up a bit further from your central vertical axis than other bags, pulling you back a ways. Finally, the bag has a relatively narrow niche (12-14kg in our experience) in which it shines. Given the bag’s robust construction, metal stay and non-removable hip belt, it is equipped to handle a decent amount of weight yet for any reasonably dialed OBT setup / weight less than 12kg you will almost certainly be better off using a much lighter bag with a lighter load carriage system that can also be used as an EDC daypack at the destination. Yet at the same time, given its scaled-up-daypack-like construction and design, the CTB35 lacks the truly heavy load carriage capabilities of more serious giant OBT haulers - for example, forgoing the slightly more efficient dimensions, load lifters, more properly sized hip belt (in favour of this tuck away one) and adjustable back-height (critical for getting a good fit esp if you want the waist belt to help offload weight) etc. of the true heavy haulers. Nonetheless, for those who have a desire for an amazingly-well built backpack-style one bag travel bag with tons of organization, decent capacity and robust materials and design, the Evergoods Civic Travel Bag 35 is an interesting choice well worth your consideration.
