The SpinCycle - A Bicycle Powered Washing Machine That Is Making Waves In Central Africa

This is the SpinCycle, a student designed bicycle powered washing machine, that provides a more effective method of washing clothes than by hand, which can be very tedious, time consuming, and tiresome. The SpinCycle has a simple yet super innovative design and it is helping people in some of the poorest countries in the world that have limited access to electricity. SpinCycle is also providing a sustainable source of income for communities in need who are utilizing the genius invention to run mobile laundry services as micro businesses. The forward thinking concept, and clever design of the SpinCycle, were invented by Rich Hewitt, a student, and volunteer. While volunteering at an orphanage in Burundi, Central Africa, Hewitt was tasked with handwashing 30 loads of children's clothes. This task was challenging and that's when Hewitt had a Eureka moment and the idea of a bicycle powered washing machine was born. The design for the SpinCycle came into fruition while Hewitt was getting his product design degree at Sheffield Hallam and he needed to complete a self directed project. At first, he designed a tricycle with a washing machine on the back, which included a rota-molded wash drum, jerry cans, belt driven perforated inner drums and a soap grater for use with blocks of detergent, commonly used in Africa. Hewitt eventually came up with a simpler, more affordable, and effective redesign with the help of two Sheffield based businesses, Gripple, who sponsors Incub, and Goodman Sparks, a supplier of commercial laundry systems. The system links the rear wheel of the bike to a closed basin, which serves as the drum equivalent of a conventional washing machine. The peddling rotates the rear wheel, therefore triggering the rotation of the basin, and the laundry, water, and detergent gets mixed inside. After 10 minutes of pedaling, rinsing water is added. Lastly, it wrings the clothes and they are hung out to dry.
